As the second season of Showtime's Penny Dreadful approaches, actress Eva Green decided to open up about what makes this "horror" series different from any other.

"I think people like to get scared and you know it's a bit spooky," Green told HFPA on Monday (featured below), "But what is very particular about that show is that it's also very psychological and extremely human. It's not just blood and sex, you know. There's much more beyond. The characters are very flawed and very interesting."

Green's character, Miss Vanessa Ives, is no exception. "She's kind of the magnet of the series," noted Green, "She kind of draws all the characters together."

Vanessa isn't just a magnet for the living. She also draws in all matter of dark creatures, from vampires to demons. The actress admitted that the series is rather tantalizing as a whole, with much to be explored. "It's rather bloody, very tempting," she explained. "Very sexy. Erotic. Very dark."

At the end of Season 1, Vanessa found herself on the very edge between living with what made her special or exorcising her demons for good. The new episodes will likely explore whatever decision she makes, as well as the repercussions for her and those closest to her. Vanessa already lost her dearest friend Mina during the Season 1 finale and there's no telling what she'll have to risk as the program continues.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
