The Internet is abuzz with rumors following the drama's midseason finale, and John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is at the heart of the speculation.

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) don't often mention their father, particularly not after his season 2 demise, but the brothers reminisced about dear old dad during "The Things We Left Behind." While their CBGBs story could have merely been for Cas' (Misha Collins) benefit, it could also be an early harbinger of Morgan's return.

We know someone in hell is smuggling demons topside, and after 8 seasons underground, the hunter might be looking for a breath of fresh air. Perhaps he will enter the story as a possible new bearer for the Mark of Cain.

Morgan, who originally left the series for a role of Grey's Anatomy, previously told Entertainment Weekly that he is open to returning. Since many fans have vilified his character despite writers' protestations, the actor would like a chance to set the record straight.

"My stance always is, I would love to come back," Morgan said. "In fact, they have trashed John so f-king much on that show that I would like to come back just to set the record straight the real way. I'm not that bad of a dad. I saved my kids. I went to hell to save my kids. How bad can I be, people? But there are a couple of storylines that I'd like to resolve, and more importantly those people mean a lot to me."
