Since Showtime's Penny Dreadful tries not to rely too heavily on digital effects, the prosthetics department gets a ton of credit for helping to bring the show's carefully constructed creatures to life.

'Penny Dreadful' To Further Explore The Occult In Season 2

The prosthetics department had its hands full during season 1, creating bloodied bodies, strange happenings and a variety of subtly devised creatures.

"We were able to commit to exploring some of these iconic characters in a new way," explained series creator John Logan during an interview on Tuesday (featured below).

While the department puts together the makeup and prosthetics for creatures like Caliban (Rory Kinnear) on a regular basis, designers also have the opportunity to work on other projects for the show, including the construction of multiple dismembered bodies.

"If the crew are looking distressed then you know you're on the right lines," insisted Makeup Effects Designer Nick Dudman.

Key Makeup Artist and Prosthetics Designer Sarita Allison has been pretty busy with the series this fall, suggesting that the program's second season will be filled with even more creatures and violence. Caliban's return alone will keep Allison busy as the iconic Frankenstein creature's distinct look has become a centerpiece for the show.

"Penny Dreadful is something that someone in my profession would give their right arm for, or somebody's right arm," teased Dudman. "Why waste a good one?"

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
