An autopsy on ex-NFL player Junior Seau, who committed suicide in May, showed no drug or alcohol use in his system at the time of death, according to a report released on Aug. 20 by the star's San Diego County medical examiner.

The New England Patriots player was said to be "completely sober" at the time of his suicide and the involvement of drugs was ruled out as a cause of death, the Examiner reported on Aug. 21. The Deputy Medical Examiner, Craig Nelson, filed the official autopsy report stating the mentioned facts. An examination of his brain also ruled out brain damage or a concussion as a cause of death.

Interestingly though, the report did point out a specific moment that might have had a connection to Seau's death.

"While he had no known suicidal ideation or confirmed attempt, there had been speculation of attempted suicide following an incident in which his vehicle drove off of a cliff," the report stated.

The event mentioned occurred on Oct. 18, 2010, when Seau was arrested because of domestic violence charges against an ex-girlfriend, the site reported. After posting bond, Seau drove his Escalade off of a cliff. Seau claimed to have fallen asleep behind the wheel and he received minor injuries.

Seau died on May 2, 2010 at the age of 43. The autopsy finally confirmed that the former football player died as a result of a suicidal gunshot wound to the chest. His girlfriend at the time, Megan P. Noderer, was the first to find Seau dead after returning home from a workout, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The autopsy report also stated that the football star drank only "socially [and] did not smoke, and there was no history of illicit drug use."
