The season premiere of Boardwalk Empire Season 3 aired on Sunday, Sept.16 at 9pm ET on HBO.

"Boardwalk" fans eagerly awaiting the return of Nucky Thompson in the popular 1920's Prohibition Era hit show can check out a preview clip of what to expect this season courtesy of HBO. 

In the clip, Chicago's most notorious gangster Al Capone brings the drama when he enters a flower shop and intentionally drops a flower vase to get close to his target Nelson Van Alden. Van Alden appears nervous and unsure about what is about to happen next so he pretends the suitcase he is carrying has a gun in it to thwart off any attempts to be attacked by Capone. 

The first episode of Season 3, titled "Resolution," picks up where Season 2 ended with Nucky at a party on New Year's Eve.

After Nucky killed Jimmy in Season 2, fans can expect Thompson to become more ruthless.


According to HBO,  fans can expect new twists this season including Nucky making decisions that fellow gangster Gyp Rosetti disagrees with; Margaret seeking to expand the hospital despite her husband's gripes about it; Gillian starting a new venture and still mentoring young Tommy; Van Alden bumping heads with other gangsters and Al Capone butting heads with an Irish mobster, Dean O'Banion. 

"Boardwalk Empire" Season 3 will consist of 12 episodes.

The main cast includes Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, Atlantic City's mainbootlegger. Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Jack Huston, Stephen Graham, Michael Stuhlbarg, Vincent Piazza, Paul Sparks, Michael Kenneth Williams, Gretchen Mol and Bobby Cannavale.

The show is an adaptation of the book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City." The show was developed by "Sporanos" writer Terenc Winter. The first episode was directed by legendary film director Martin Scorsese and cost $18 million.

Boardwalk Empire was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards in 2011. tIt has won a Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Series and the show's lead actor Buscemi won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Dramatic Series.
