After much speculation on whether Andrew Garfield would be by Emma Stone's side at the Oscars, he failed to show up, and apparently it's because he bailed at the last minute.

More Chatter On Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone At The Oscars

On Monday, HollywoodLife reported Garfield wasn't by his girlfriend's side even though she was nominated for her first award because he backed out.

Garfield was reportedly afraid his attendance at the show would take the focus away from Stone and the film Birdman because it would put the attention on their relationhsip.

Is The Usually Shy Of Public Events Andrew Garfield Going To Be By Emma Stone's Side At The Oscars?

"Andrew takes things way too seriously and he changed his mind in joining Emmalast minute because he told her that he wanted it to be about her. He wanted the night to be about Birdman and just the film and all that surrounds it, not their relationship," a source said.

But backing out at the last minute would make anyone angry, except Stone apparently.

"Surprisingly she is actually OK with the decision because she told him that she wasn't going to win anyways so he shouldn't worry for her to join," the source said.

Apparently if Stone thought she had a good chance of winning, she would have taken the whole situation differently.

"They want to protect their relationship and not be a couple in public so they both decided that it was better off this way during Oscar night. If Emma thought she had a chance to win, then things would be a completely different story, but she let Andrew do his own thing during the Oscars. They have no drama with each other so people shouldn't think of this as a snub," the source said.
