On March 7 the Penny Dreadful Twitter account tweeted a photo of the "proper mood" for a night shoot, featuring some extras in a rural area on a misty night.

The account also hinted at some epic and intimidating scenery this season.

The Victorian supernatural drama will be darker than ever this season as it dives into a world of hidden secrets and past pain.

While all the monsters during the show's first season were vampires and demons, the program's upcoming installment will face a very mortal villain with Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory). Though introduced briefly in season 1, there is still a great deal left to be learned about the woman. Who is she really? And why is she after Vanessa Ives (Eva Green)?

The series will also continue to explore Vanessa's own dark struggles, as well as Ethan Chandler's (Josh Hartnett) werewolf origins.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season on Sunday, May 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
