Showtime released an all new preview for Penny Dreadful this week, offering insight into where the cast is at this season.

New 'Penny Dreadful' Posters Feature Vanessa Ives & Ethan Chandler 

"You can't change who you are, no matter who you save or who you love," warned Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) in a clip from behind the scenes at the Victorian supernatural drama (featured below), which was released by Showtime on Monday.

Now that the series is a season in, the background of each character will be further explored. "We're getting to understand them more," explained actor Harry Treadaway, who plays Victor Frankenstein.

A Look Inside The Home Of Penny Dreadful's New Villain 

"Last season's sort of theme was these misfits came together and started hunting something," noted Hartnett. "And this season the hunters have now become the prey."

With the introduction of Penny Dreadful's first human villain, Evelyn Poole, comes even more chaos. "It's like it was darker," said Helen McCrory, who plays Evelyn. "It just got darker."

"You've got sex, you've got guilt, you've got redemption" added Timothy Dalton, the actor who portrays the formidable Sir Malcolm.

With plenty of secrets and characters struggling to cope with their own fates, the series will certainly be broadening the scope as it moves forward. Will Vanessa give in to evil? Will Ethan ever be able to control his animal half?

These characters have their own battles to fight, but their world will inevitably be turned upside down as dark forces continues to rise.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season on Sunday, May 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
