The co-creators of ABC's Once Upon a Time recently addressed Rumple's (Robert Carlyle) storyline this season and the potential origin of the Dark Curse.

Once Upon a Time co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently to discuss a variety of topics. One question about the Dark Curse caused them to clear things up in regard to the origin of the curse.

"He brought them there to die so he can leave with it," Kitsis said when asked about why Rumple needed the Queens of Darkness to steal the curse.

Horowitz then elaborated that they have never actually shown the origin of the Dark Curse.

"We've never said definitively who created it or not. Rumple says at the end of season 1 that he put the true love potion onto it to create it, but what he was talking about was implementing the curse," Horowitz explained. "What we have shown now is it wound up protected by the Chernobog at one point and he had to get it."

Kitsis added that the curse is like a virus that Rumple essentially weaponized and then found a vaccine for it.

Meanwhile, as Rumple goes on his quest to find his happy ending, fans should not expect a re-write of history regarding his son, Baelfire (Michael Raymond-James).

"Unfortunately Baelfire is no longer with us," Kitsis said, with Horowitz adding, "The loss of Baelfire weighs heavily on his quest and it's addressed."

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
