1,000 MPH Car Passed Preliminary Test: VIDEO Of Rocket Car Engine Test
The British team behind a project to create a 1,000 mph car have cleared a preliminary test of the rocket they hope will fuel the vehicle, according to NBC.
The test-firing, performed in a bomb-proof military hanger at an airport near the English town of Newquay, lasted only a few seconds - further proving the speed of the rocket and the potential thrust it can give the vehicle it will be attached to, dubbed the Bloodhound SSC.
The test was the largest rocket firing in the U.K. in over 20 years and over the course of the few seconds that it took, the rocket produced more than 30,000 in horsepower, according to Fox News.
"Nobody's done anything like this before ... If you're going to do something like this, you've got to ... set a high bar," project director Richard Noble said.
The existing world land speed record for a vehicle is 763 mph, set 15 years ago by the same British team now working on breaking the record once again.
The rocket will work with a fighter jet engine from a Eurofighter Typhoon in a supersonic car. Andy Green, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot, will sit behind the wheel when the vehicle does its record run.
He called the preliminary test "a huge success."
Green is the current land speed record holder and in 1887, he became the first person to break the sound barrier with the ThrustSSC, which reached 763 mph and was performed in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.
The following is a video of the engine test. Viewers can also see a flame coming out from the rocket and look at the meter to see the actual speed of the engine.
After seeing the flames coming out of the back of the engine, Green said jokingly, "I'm going to have to have a chat with the engineers, I didn't know my A** was going to be on fire."
