Elizabeth Escalona, a Texas mother who tortured and beat her two year old daughter because she hadn’t progressed in her potty training, could face life imprisonment as she is sentenced this week. The sentencing hearing was scheduled for Monday but the judge recessed the case until Tuesday without ruling on a sentence.

The mother pleaded guilty in July to beating her toddler and gluing her hands to a wall as punishment for not making sufficient progress in her potty training.

The severe beating left the toddler with broken bones, bruises, bleeding and in a coma for two days.

It was said by the prosecution that the mother kicked the little girl in the stomach as well as hitting her with household objects.

Dr. Amy Barton, a former pediatrician who treated the girl, testified at the sentencing hearing on Monday as she cried saying, “This was one of the most shocking cases I have ever seen.”

"I have no comment and only God can judge me. That's all I got to say," Escalona said in July, after entering her guilty plea.

Escalona was expected to be sentenced today, but the judge recessed the case until Tuesday without ruling, according to WFAA.

The little girl has since made significant progress in her recovery, and she and the woman's other children have been placed with a relative and are in the care of Child Protective Services.

It has been claimed that Escalona physically beat her daughter so badly that she suffered significant brain trauma and bleeding inside her skull. The mother later called the grandmother to explain that there was something wrong with her daughter and that she wasn’t responsive. She was found with broken bones, bruises and was bleeding.

Police records show that the two year old's siblings reported that their mother had repeatedly kicked the little girl in the stomach, as well as hit her in the stomach with a jug. After putting the two year old through a vicious beating the mother then glued the little girl's hands to a wall until they bled, according to reports.
