Friends, family and around 300 fans gathered on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Kyle Bennett Armadillo BMX Track in Texas to honor BMX rider and three-time world champion cyclist Kyle Bennett who died that same day in a severe car accident.

Bennett was 33. The bicycle track is near the San Jacinto River at Interstate 45 in rural Montgomery County, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Bennett's mother, Donnell Purse, grandfather, Don Collins, and fiancée, Lynsie Argenti, watched as one of Bennett's bicycles was wheeled around the mourners with one of his No. 88 racing jerseys draped across the handlebars, the publication added.

Many attendees pressed candles into the earth around Bennett's bicycle and some laid flowers on the track's finish line. Some mourners also donated cash to help with Bennett's funeral expenses. Family members and friends of the Olympic BMX rider got up in front of those at the park to speak about Bennett career and life.

John Purse, Bennett's stepfather, said, "Kyle gave of himself to this track and to this sport. We've lost his presence, but we haven't lost his spirit. That will never go away."

"It doesn't take a genius to know he was amazing on a bike," said BMX racer Travis Postany. "We're here to pay respect to a good friend, a good son, a good fiancé, a good grandson."

At the time of the accident, Bennett was not wearing his seatbelt and was traveling at accelerated speed in his truck when it swerved off the road and hit a pipe before hitting a set of iron gates of a private residence and some trees, according to Business Week. Bennett's truck uprooted several trees before stopping upside down in the private home's front yard, police reported. See photos of Bennett's car after the accident.

By the time police took him out of the damaged vehicle he was already pronounced dead. No one else was involved or injured in the accident.

Bennett was a member of the 2008 Olympic BMX team, a sport that made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. He was a three-time Union Cycliste Internationale champion and a three-time National Cycle League champion. This past summer, Bennett made the BMX Hall of Fame for his accomplishments over the span of his career.
