'Bloodline's Kyle Chandler Talks How John Rayburn Was Unlike Anything He's Ever Done Before

Mendelsohn, who plays Danny in the Netflix series, spoke with Indiewire about his various roles in film and TV. The actor has a pattern of taking villainous parts, and Danny is no different. The "black sheep" of the Rayburn family, Danny is manipulative and vengeful but also surprisingly sympathetic.

The actor told Indiewire that he knows he's done a lot of villain roles.

"You've got no argument from me on that point at all. I think that's been going on pretty consistently since 'Animal Kingdom,'" Mendelssohn said.

The actor credited the writers of Bloodline for allowing a greater exploration into Danny, compared to other roles.

"It's the writing that changes from one to the other. With Danny, you've got a lot more opportunity to understand where he's coming from and how the world looks to him . . . It's more about just being, in this case, a solid nemesis, if you like," he said.

"That happens in the writing. Danny's got a lot more range of stuff and you get a lot more chance to see the world and how it feels to him," he added. "But you are right to point out the essential slant of villainy, because that is clearly there."

The actor has certainly made his mark with his performance as Danny, especially among a cast of all stars that includes Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek, Linda Cardellini, Norbert Leo Butz and Sam Shepard.

Bloodline season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
