MTA Chairman: 'Subway System Will Come Back A Little At A Time'
Hurricane Sandy lashed out on New York and other states in the East Coast leaving historical damages to many homes, businesses, claiming lives and shutting down the metropolitan regions transportation system.
MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said Tuesday morning that the New York's largest transportation system faced a disaster as devastating at it has ever faced in its history.
"Sandy wreaked havoc on the entire transportation system - the subways, the buses, Metro North, and Long Island Rail Road in every single borough of the city and every single county in the MTA region," Lhota said.
"Flooding, fallen trees and branches, and a lack of power have devastated the entire system."
Lhota added that several New York Transit Authority subway tunnels from Manhattan to Brooklyn were under water.
In addition, Lhota mentioned that six garages were "disabled" by high water and rail yards at 207th and 148th streets in Upper Manhattan were also hit by super storm Sandy.
The trains, subways and buses themselves were not damaged by the storm but the tracks ad lines were, according to Lhota.
"The assessment will take more time than we thought," Lhota mentioned.
"One thing is that the water level at the South Street station downtown is literally up to the ceiling."
Lhota said the subway system will have to come back in stages, with riders using "flexibility and creativity" by using a mixture of the trains and buses that will be available until everything is back on line.
"If there are parts of the subway system we can get up, we will get them up," Lhota added.
"We will be able to complement that with our bus service as well."
The MTA bus services are scheduled to come back into service late Tuesday and begin running on its regular schedule Wednesday.
The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and Queens Midtown Tunnel remain shut due to flooding and are currently being pumped out.
Cuomo said "catastrophic or historic" are not too strong of phrases to explain or describe the impact of the storm.
