Orange Is the New Black is one of the most popular shows of the last few years, but is it worth watching?

'Orange Is the New Black' & More Are Getting Uploaded To Netflix For June

Premiering in 2013, Orange Is the New Black is a Netflix series adapted from Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name: Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. The show takes place in a women's prison, full of huge, colorful characters.

The series begins with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) going to prison for carrying a suitcase filled with drug money for her ex-girlfriend Alex (Laura Prepon). Piper lives a somewhat upscale life but her world is forever changed after entering prison.

Some of the prisoners she meets include Taystee (Danielle Brooks), a confident young woman who loves making people laugh, Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning), a religious zealot and "Crazy Eyes" (Uzo Aduba), a troubled woman who becomes obsessed with Piper.

The show often uses a flashback structure to show the prisoners' lives before going to jail, usually revealing what led them there in the first place.

While the show's characters are predominately women, the comedic tone makes this something that both men and women can appreciate.

One of the bigger topics in the series is LGBT issues. There are different characters who identify as lesbian, bisexual or transgender, in addition to heterosexual characters.

The first two seasons are currently available on Netflix to stream in their entirety. The episodes are about 50-60 minutes long and there are 26 in total.

The third season is set to be released on Friday, June 12.
