As Big Brother fans now know, new houseguest Audrey Middleton is transgender, making her the first transgender contestant in the show's history. The news was leaked by TMZ shortly after the cast announcement, though according to Chen, nobody was supposed to find out until the BB17 premiere.

Will There Be More 'Big Brother 17' Houseguests Announced Soon?

"Let me just say this to all of you ladies here at the table. Let me say this to everybody watching out there," Chen said on Wednesday's show. "Audrey told us she is planning on telling everyone in the Big Brother house that she is transgender. When she and all the other houseguests meet each other for the first time on the premiere night... When all of the houseguests are being sequestered as they always are at this stage of the game."

After a brief discussion was had among Chen's fellow panelists, the host got very emotional as she urged viewers to watch and see Audrey's story unfold.

"For me personally and to anyone watching the game, I hope you watch with compassion and an open mind, to learn something about a community that you may not be familiar with," she said, choking up. "This is Audrey's story to tell and I'm looking forward to hearing it next Wednesday."

It was a rare showing of emotion for Chen who is usually very stoic and professional, suggesting that Audrey's story will be handled with sensitivity on the show.

Big Brother 17 premieres on Wednesday, June 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
