Family members of Hector Camacho are keeping a somber vigil alongside the former boxer who was declared brain dead after he was shot in the face.

Camacho was shot in Puerto Rico while sitting in the passenger's seat of a car on Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle was also shot and killed immediately.

Camacho was subsequently declared brain-dead on Thursday.

Family members are trying to decide if they should disconnect the three-time world champion from a respirator at a Puerto Rican hospital. They have chosen to keep him on life support until at least Saturday. An aunt of the boxer, Aida Camacho, said his family are trying to decide if they want to donate his organs should they agree to take him off of life support.

"My father is a boxer and we're going to let him fight for his life," Camacho's oldest son, Hector Camacho Jr. told Associated Press. "The doctors have said a lot of things, but he is alive, he's in the fight."

If the family decides to make the grim decision of taking him off of life support, they may fly the Harlem native's body to New York for a funeral and burial. Camacho earned the nickname the "Harlem Heckler" when he was a New York City resident before he became a professional boxer.

Camacho was shot while sitting in a car with 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed instantly. Police spokesman Alex Diaz told Associated Press that local authorities officers found ten bags of cocaine in Moreno's pocket, and another, left open in the car.

No arrests have been made so far but authorities are investigating the shooting and questioning potential witnesses.

Camacho fought many high-profile fights throughout his thirty year career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. As a winner in the super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world divisions, his career high helped him earn a record of 79-6-3.

Camacho was plagued with drugs, alcohol, several arrests and violence during his career. Last year, Camacho was shot in Puerto Rico as he drove away from who he claimed were carjackers.

His last fight was in 2010, shortly before his birthday.
