Although the Denver Broncos (7-3) currently have a foothold on the AFC West, the team will now have to fill a void left by a crucial piece of their offensive ground attack, Willis McGahee. Nonetheless, a strong defense led by Von Miller and the struggles of the Kansas City Chiefs (1-9) should help in alleviating any concerns.
The Broncos grew their first place lead to three games after defeating their division rival San Diego Chargers by a 30-23 margin last Sunday. Denver is on the brink of matching their win total from last season, courtesy of a five-game winning streak.
However, they'll have to continue their dominance without the services of McGahee. The backfield mainstay was placed on injured reserve after tearing the medial collateral ligament in his right knee while being tackled in the game against the Chargers. The running back currently leads the team with 731 yards rushing.
Rookie Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno will replace McGahee by committee. The trio has a combined 297 yards along with two touchdowns on 82 carries this season.
"We're certainly going to miss Willis. To say we're not going to miss Willis would be not telling the truth because he's that good of a player. ... So, Knowshon and Ronnie and Lance have to step up. Everybody else has to step their game up, too, when you're missing one of your top players," Peyton Manning told ESPN.
Fortunately for Manning, Denver shouldn't have to be too concerned with their defense, which is among the NFL's elite allowing only 312.8 yards per game, including 93.8 rushing.
