The San Francisco 49ers (7-2) will face off against the New Orleans Saints (5-5) at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. While the 49ers still managed to prevail in last week's matchup without the services of their star QB Alex Smith, it still remains uncertain as to whether Smith, Colin Kaepernick or both signal callers will play against the Saints on Sunday.

The respective game will be a rematch of sorts of last season's NFC divisional playoff game, which San Francisco came out victorious in by a 36-21 margin on a Smith touchdown pass to Vernon Davis with just nine seconds remaining.

Nonetheless, backup QB Kaepernick was impressive in his first ever start, going 16 of 23 for 243 yards with two touchdowns versus the Chicago Bears.

The second stringer may get the ball again, as there is a possibility that Smith may still not be ready from the concussion he suffered on Nov. 11 against the St. Louis Rams.

"I wanted to come out and show what I'm capable of and show that I can be a starter. That's what I've been trying to prove since I've been in the league," second-year QB Kaepernick told ESPN.

When healthy, Smith has been one of the league's best quarterbacks for the West-leading 49ers sporting a 70.0 completion percentage along with 13 touchdowns and five picks, while putting up a career-high 104.1 passer rating that ranks him third in the NFL.

Although 49ers' coach Jim Harbaugh is expecting Smith to be medically cleared to start, he did say that the club could switch quarterbacks on a week-to-week basis, and even during the middle of a game.
