For legions of young adults with a case of 1990s nostalgia, Christmas came early this year.

Disney confirmed this week that a sequel for the iconic sitcom "Boy Meets World" is in the early stages of preproduction. The show, "Girl Meets World," will focus on the daughter of Cory and Topanga, the protagonists of the original series, and stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will return for the new show.

Savage, who played Cory, confirmed the news through his Twitter account, writing, "I'm going to be a father! Well, on TV at least. The 'Boy Meets World' sequel is officially happening!"

A spokesperson for Disney said in a prepared statement that details are still being ironed out with Michael Jacobs, creator of "Boy Meets World" and the brains behind the new "Girl Meets World."

"The pilot is still in the very early stages of development with creator and executive producer Michael Jacobs, Emmy Award-winning creator/producer behind 'Boy Meets World,' 'My Two Dads' and 'Charles In Charge,' among others," the Disney representative said.

Danielle Fishel, who played the role on Topanga, wrote an open letter on her Tumblr page Monday about the news, in which she thanked the fans who supported the new project and tried to soothe those who worried the new series will tarnish the legacy of "Boy Meets World."

Fishel wrote that while she isn't sure how many old cast members will return or in what capacity, the decision to move forward with "Girl Meets World" was made after conversations with the other principal actors from "Boy Meets World," including Rider Strong (Cory's best friend Shawn Hunter), Will Friedle (Cory's brother Eric) and William Daniels (Mr. Feeny).

She also reminded fans that this show won't be "Boy Meets World" reincarnated and asked for their patience while the new series finds its footing.

"GMW is a new show. It isn't BMW brought back to life but in current day," Fishel wrote. "It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages. It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages. BMW never spoke down to the audience and we are going to do our best to never do that with GMW. But please keep in mind that this there will be episode 1, of season 1, of a brand new show. We started at the same place with BMW but we evolved and we evolved quickly.

"For those of you who knew and loved BMW, please allow this show to evolve as well. Stick with us. Give us a chance."
