Blood Red Beach Scare In Sydney, Red Algae Bloom Draws Bible Connections [VIDEO]
A rare number of algae turned water blood red off of Bondi Beach in Australia, scaring the public and creating buzz about its biblical connection.
The beaches were closed and experts linked the red water to a thick bloom of red marine algae called noctiluca scintillans, also known as "Sea Sparkle" because of its bioluminescence.
Twitter posts about the sight included one that said the image was "straight out of revelations" and blame the "Mayans," while another user wrote, "Where did I read about this, oh yeah, the Bible."
Sydney's other beaches, Clovelly Beach and Gordon's Bay, were also closed while authorities tested the water, however, they were all reopened on Tuesday as the algae began to fade, according to ABC. Australia is currently in the transition from spring to summer, which begins in December.
Red algae is not toxic but swimmers were encouraged to not swim in the algae-colored waters because of the possibility of skin irration from its high ammonia levels. Some still chose to jump in the waters though, like in the above image where a man swam among the algae.
Patricia Estebe, from an Australian tourist office, explained the rare occasion in another way: "This phenomenon is a result of the salt content in brine shrimp Artemia salina and algae Dunaliella salina. When the salt concentration is very high - which is the case before harvest - the brine shrimp die and saline algae proliferates giving this unusual colour. "
Prince Charles visited Bondi Beach earlier this month as part of a tour celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. Watch the video below for images of the red blood beach scare in Australia.
