Real-Life Popeye Arms: Moustafa Ismail Says 31 Inch Biceps Are All-Natural (VIDEO)
Moustafa Ismail, a Massachusetts bodybuilder, reportedly eats nine pounds of carbohydrates, seven pounds of protein, and drinks three gallons of water every day in order to maintain the 31-inch arms he carries around.
While critics feel as though Ismail's bulging biceps are the result of either steroids or some other illegal substance, the 24-year-old insisted that they are naturally his. The Egyptian bodybuilder allegedly began his grueling weight-lifting regimen when a guest at his uncle's wedding in his native land poked fun at his overweight body.
While the Egyptian muscle man clearly resembles Popeye the sailor man, he doesn't care for spinach the way the cartoon character does.
"They call me Popeye, the Egyptian Popeye. I like chicken, beef, anything but spinach," he said, according to Boston.
Massive amounts of seafood, poultry and protein shakes give Ismail the fuel he needs to work through his daily two-hour workouts, in which he's known to lift up to 600 pounds. He also takes vitamins and mineral supplements.
In terms of his clothing, it's quite the challenge for Ismail to find shirts that fit over his arms. Since the rest of his body is relatively average, it can be difficult for him to find ideal fitting shirts.
Nonetheless, controversy over Ismail's arms began when Guinness made the decision to recognize him for having the biggest upper arm muscles in the world.
Although Ismail acknowledged that he lost a night of sleep over the negative chatter, he ultimately said that the criticism "is motivation for me - it's not something that's gonna put me down."
Ismail eventually went to Tokyo to make an appearance on a Fuji TV documentary movie. On the program, doctors collected blood samples and X-rayed his arms, but he stated they found nothing out of the ordinary.
Ismail moved to Franklin (southeast of Boston) in the United States in 2007, but began lifting weights in Alexandria, Egypt. In order to afford a gym membership and meet his dietary requirements, he initially worked two jobs as an attendant at a gas station until his wife complained that he was working too hard.
