Jovan Belcher's girlfriend Kasandra Perkins was shot and killed by the NFL player on Saturday in a murder-suicide incident that shocked Kansas City, the NFL community and the family of Perkins.

Belcher reportedly shot Perkins multiple times in front of her mother, reports the Kansas City Star. Perkins' family was in "utter shock" after news of the murder broke and said the couple "couldn't have seemed happier together," TMZ reports.

"Jovan and Kasandra always seemed to be in love. In fact, we're told when Kasandra got pregnant, she and Jovan were 'ecstatic," reporter TMZ citing members of Perkins' family.

The couple's daughter Zoey was born in September this year.

According to Kansas City police Belcher, 25, shot and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend at a home in Kansas City. Then he drove to a nearby practice facility where he shot and killed himself.

Belcher committed suicide in front of the Kansas City Chiefs' head coach and General Manager after thanking them for everything they had done for him, according to Kansas City police.

The Kansas City Chiefs' released a statement following the tragic incident.

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," the Chiefs said in a statement on their website.

"We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."
