"Damon Salvatore is a hands-down lushy, smarmy drunk. That's why we love him! His weaknesses are his strengths, and his strengths are his weaknesses," he revealed, while also mentioning that upon leaving Comic-Con, he'd be back in Georgia for filming "cool stuff."

"There's a lot of great Damon and Bonnie stuff. The opening of season 6, with Damon and Bonnie, is my favorite stuff ever. She's the reason that Damon's girlfriend is chilled out in this box and when they look at each other, they resent each other, they love each other, and they are stuck together. It sounds like a beautiful recipe for disaster and amazingness," he explained.

Somerhalder confirmed that Damon has grown to love Bonnie quite a bit.

"At the end of the day, Bonnie is truly one of the only people Damon would go to bat for," he shared, adding, "It's Stefan [Paul Wesley], Bonnie, Alaric [Matt Davis], and Damon would go out on a limb for Matt [Zach Roerig]. There are very few people that he would do this for, but he loves Bonnie."

So it sounds like the Damon-Bonnie dynamic will continue to present itself in the upcoming season.

The series returns to The CW in the fall for season 7.
