Twins Fighting in Womb Video Captured on Cinematic MRI [Watch Amazing Footage]
An incredible "cinematic MRI" video clip has captured twins fighting in a womb. The amazing video was shot with the new technology which pieces multiple MRI images together to create a video.
Dr. Marisa Taylor-Clarke of the Robert Steiner Unit at Imperial College in London told Reuters that the cinematic MRI allows doctors to see when twins fight for space in the womb. The video allows doctors to study twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a condition in which the blood supplies of the two fetuses become connected and one twin starts to grow larger than the other.
Taylor-Clarke explained to New Scientist why she uses cinematic MRI to study TTTS. "A lot of the so-called videos in the womb are very processed, so they do a lot of reconstructing and computer work afterwards. These are the raw images that are acquired immediately."
TTTS is a dangerous condition which can occur any time during a multiple pregnancy. One baby, the recipient twin, can get too much blood overloading his or her cardiovascular system, and may die from heart failure. The other baby, the donor twin, does not get enough blood and may die from severe anemia, according to fetalhope.com. If this condition is left untreated, mortality rates can near 100%.
"So one of the problems with the imbalances of blood flow is that if you get a sudden shift of blood from one twin to the other, that can cause brain injury, so it can cause stroke or hemorrhage in one or both of the twins' brains. MRI can pick up signs of brain injury much earlier and in much greater detail than ultrasound can at the moment," Taylor-Clarke told Reuters.
