From Whitney Houston's death to the worldwide success of the K-Pop hit "Gangnam Style," 2012 was, by all accounts, an eventful year.Celebrities' scandals remained a highly interesting topic this year with the divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, and the cheating scandal between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson topping headlines. The British royal family also received its fair share of attention after Prince William and Katherine Middleton announced they are expecting their first baby together. But that was not all the U.K. had to offer to the entertainment world. The London 2012 Olympics was the world stage for two U.S. sports stars to shine: Michael Phelps and Gabby Douglas. Phelps became the most decorated athlete in the world and Douglas was months later named this year's top female athlete after becoming the first African-American to win the all-around gymnastics gold medal.

10. Twilight Franchise Ends with "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" Release

The Twilight saga "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" was released this year bringing the Twilight Franchise to an end. The first four movies starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward earned $2.5 billion at theaters around the world.

Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas was named the 2012 Female Athlete of the Year on Dec. 21, according to the Associated Press The gymnast narrowly beat Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin for the honor through votes submitted by editors and news reporters in America.

5. PSY 'Gangnam Style' Phenomena: South Korean Rapper's K-Pop Hit Breaks 1 Billion Views' Mark on YouTube  

South Korean rapper PSY released one song in 2012 that created a worldwide frenzy, as fans began doing the popularized horse riding dance of "Gangnam Style." Its music video became the most watched video on YouTube surpassing 1 billion views and defeating Justin Bieber's "Baby." PSY made his way to major stages in the United States.

4. Kristen Stewart Cheats on Robert Pattinson with Married Film Director Rupert Sanders

One of the biggest celebrity stories this year involved Hollywood's top earning actress and her on and off-screen love, Robert Pattinson. Kristen Stewart, stayed in the spotlight months before the release of the final"Twilight" film, after photos leaked of her embracing and kissing married director Rupert Sanders in July. Prince William and his wife Katherine Middleton announced on December 3 that they were expecting their first baby together. Shortly after the news kate Middleton was hospitalized in London for symptoms related to her pregnancy but has recovered since then. Her hospitalization also made headlines after one of the nurses at the hospital received a prank call from Australia with a radio host pretending to be the Queen and wanting to speak to Middleton. The nurse, who transfered the call to Middleton's room, was later found dead of an apparent suicide.

1. Whitney Houston's Death

Whitney Houston died at the age of 49 in her Beverly Hills hotel room on February 11, as she prepared to attend the annual pre-Grammy bash of her producer and mentor Clive Davis. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said Houston died of an accidental death in her hotel bathtub and a toxicology report added that heart disease and cocaine use contributed to her death. Houston reportedly ingested cocaine immediately prior to her collapse in the bathtub. According to reports, she could have passed out first due to the intoxication from the cocaine or she could have had a hear attack and then drowned.
