A mom has shot an intruder five times in an attempt to protect herself and her kids from the unwanted guest. The mother, from Georgia, has been hailed as a hero by some gun advocates, who are using it as an example of why guns are necessary for American citizens.

The National Rifle Association has publicized the story of the mom who is claiming she acted in self defense against the intruder to protect herself and her two children.

Melinda Herman was at home with her two kids when she realized an intruder had broken into their Loganville home.

Paul Slater, the suspect in the incident, had rung the doorbell of the house a number of times to see that nobody was home, and when there was no answer he allegedly decided to break in.

However, Herman, realizing that the man was breaking in quickly retrieved her firearm and gathered her two children to hide in the bathroom. She also used the time to call her husband to tell him what was happening.

Husband Donnie Herman is heard telling his wife in a recording of the phone call: "He's in the bedroom? Shh, shh, relax. Just remember everything that I showed you, everything that I taught you, all right?"

Herman has since explained that he had taken his wife to a shooting range to teach her how to operate a firearm.

When the intruder opened the door to the crawl space the three were hiding in, Herman opened fire, shooting Slater five times.

The intruder allegedly pleaded with her to stop, however, she kept firing until she had emptied her rounds, various reports have stated.

The NRA has praised the husband and wife for their actions, and shared their story on Twitter. Many of their supporters have equally praised Melinda as a hero, and used her as a perfect example of why gun ownership is necessary.

Husband, Donnie Herman has told WSBTV: "My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as responsible, prepared gun owner."
