Why hasn't FX's American Horror Story been renewed for season 6 yet?

The Parents Television Council Is Completely Disgusted By 'American Horror Story: Hotel'

FX president John Landgraf spoke to Decider in a new interview posted Thursday about American Horror Story and many other topics. Landgraf spoke about why American Horror Story has not yet been renewed and the expense of producing a show on such a big scale.

Discussing the lack of renewal so far, he said, "that's an artifact of when we do things. It's obviously one of the biggest hits on cable."

Last year, FX renewed American Horror Story for a fifth season shortly after the premiere of Freak Show. There is no telling if and when the show will be renewed for season 6, but boss Ryan Murphy is reportedly planning the concept already.

Landgraf also admitted that American Horror Story is an expensive show for FX, though it has done well for the network.

"It hasn't been a perfectly consistent trajectory. It has depended some on where we shot it. We shot the first two seasons in California, and the next two seasons in New Orleans, and then we moved it back to California," he explained. "The first two seasons in California, there wasn't a California tax credit. We got a very substantial value from moving it to Louisiana, including the tax credit and lower labor rates. When we moved it back to California, there was a tax credit in place. It's an expensive show. Ryan Murphy has an ambitious vision, and we have to build an entirely new set or group of sets every year, and it has an ever-expanding cast."

American Horror Story: Hotel airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
