Prior to claiming she was suffering from narcolepsy, Messer said her on-screen behavior, which included nodding out while holding her brother's baby, was the result of anxiety and depression. However, the more she makes excuses, the more fans doubt what she's saying.

In the comment section of a report by The Ashley's Reality Roundup, a reader wrote, "Even if someone was stupid enough to believe she does have narcolepsy, does she really think it would make anything she’s done okay? She has still put her kids in danger. If she had a medical condition that severe, she still shouldn’t have custody until it was treated and under control."

Another commenter on the site pointed out that Messer's allegations against Corey Simms, which claimed he would do anything to upset her, were outlandish, and that a judge would never take custody away from a mother simply because their father was trash-talking her.
