On the heels of whispers suggesting Nikon was working on its own version of high end compact cameras, a new report throws more timber into the rumor mill. According to Nikon Rumors, Nikon is expected to announce a trio of compact shooters that will feature 1-inch sensors, as found on its Nikon 1 J5 offering.

The three cameras will offer lenses of various focal lengths and apertures to cover a broad range of photography. Whether you're traveling and want to pack light or just want something small to take photos with minus the weight of a DSLR camera, then a premium build compact camera might be a more suitable option.

Word is that Nikon is set to release a wide angle 18-50mm f1/8-2.8 version, a standard 24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 variant and a superzoom 24-500mm f/2.8-5.6 model. Purportedly at least one or all the cameras will be hot shoe enabled and include an optional external electronic viewfinder. Nikon is hoping to appeal to advanced photographers and semiprofessionals with the marketing slogan "Always in your bag."

Should these rumors prove to be true, the new compact Nikon cameras could possibly butt heads with Sigmas dp0-dp4 range of cameras. While there's no definite information on price just yet, Nikon could try to remain competitive among cameras in the same class. Sony and Canon feature similar compact premium cameras with 1-inch sensors, the Cyber-shot RX100 III and the PowerShot G7X, respectively. Both the Sony Cyber run within the price range of $650-$700. As we get closer to 2016, which is when these cameras are rumored to be announced, we should receive more details about pricing and availability.
