She rocked the stage in Angola at an event that Jose Eduardo dos Santos paid for. He’s known for being a ruthless leader in the area.

So many community and human rights activists hoped Nicki would turn down the chance to perform for $2 million. And despite the backlash, she repped Angola proudly.

But she’s not the first celebrity to perform for a brutal dictator.

Kanye West got backlash when he was paid $3 million to perform for gangster Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s grandchildren. Mariah Carey cashed in $1 million after singing four songs for the family of Moammar Khadafy. She followed the likes of Usher and Beyonce who also performed for the clan.

As for Nicki’s case, dos Santos is known for taking advantage of Angola’s diamond and oil industry “to amass an illegitimate fortune while maintaining control over all branches of the government, the military and civil society.”

On top of that, he’s accused of murdering and imprisoning anyone who tries to come against him; whether it be a politician, journalist or community leader.

While Nicki made $2 million off the performance, it’s said that residents of Angola struggle and earn less than $30 a month or $1 a day.

The President of the Human Rights Foundation, Thor Halvorssen, was one of many to ask Nicki not to perform.

He said, “The payment you are receiving from your Angolan sponsors is the result of government corruption and human-rights violations.”
