This year's Golden Globes shocked everyone in more ways than one. From The Martian winning the best in comedy category and Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagging best actor to that DiCaprio-Gaga brush up moment and Ricky Gervais' jaw dropping jokes - it was surely a night to remember.

Now that the Globes just wrapped up, all eyes are on the 88th Academy Awards that is set to take place on Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theater. Nominations will be announced Thursday morning. While we wait, we've gathered some intel on this year's predictions.

Johnny Depp Says He Doesn't Want To Win An Oscar, Ever?

Is The Revenant about to sweep the night?

After The Revenant bagged the most major awards during the Globes, is it set to have the same fate during the Oscars? CNN reports that indeed, Leo has worked very hard to be considered for an Oscar. The entire movie was even shot using purely natural light. However, it may not be an enough indicator that Alejandro González Iñárritu's film is going to own the night.

The Golden Globes shouldn't be considered as one that the Academies echo. In fact, just last year Birdman lost to Boyhood while The Social Network won over The King's Speech back in 2010.

Right now, The Martian, Spotlight and The Big Short are still formidable contenders.

Mad Max: Fury Road and Carol set to receive a lot of love

Just last year, the National Board of Review hailed Mad Max: Fury Road as their film of the year. Carol received quite the buzz as well and even garnered Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett a Globes nomination for best actress. Also considering the fact that both films are a box office success, predictions are in favor for both in the upcoming awards night.

Although, Carol may not measure up to the technical categories The Revenant may be nominated for, it's the acting prowess of Blanchett and Mara that is set to put the film on favorable ground.

Mad Max is receiving a lot of buzz for a best picture nod, along with a slew of technical and craft nominations.

But what about Star Wars?

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens broke multitudes of box office records during its release late last year. It received world-wide acclaim and reignited the rumors that it could be in a coveted spot for a best picture nod and more.

However, one must remember that Star Wars albeit being favorable hasn't earned a best picture nomination since its first installment back in '77, A New Hope. The fact is the competition this year is stiff and may not even allow the J.J. Abrams movie to slide pass through everyone else.

There will be surefire surprises

Straight Outta Compton is one film that may just sneak right in and bag the best picture nod, after netting a Screen Actors Guild nod for best ensemble. Other surprising wins many include Michael B Jordan for best actor in Creed, and Charlotte Rampling for best actress in 45 Years.

Maya Taylor is another dark horse everyone should watch out for. She's worked hard just like Rampling and her performance in Tangerine is worth noting. While Kirsten Stewart may have been shut out of major awards this year, the actress has been quietly collecting awards before, including becoming the first American actress to win a César, France's equivalent for the Oscars.
