We recently got our first glimpse at Independence Day 2 with its first trailer, and this one seems like it is definitely going to up the ante when it comes to the antagosnistic forces.

Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are back to help strategize and fight the extraterrestrial forces that threaten to annihilate the planet.

The trailer shows Goldblum's character David Levinson being brought back to assess the threat as he is taken to the settlement of alien forces that are preparing for war on America.

"Today we will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression and persecution but from annihilation," the president is heard addressing the nation. "And should we rue the day, the fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday but they day that the world said in one voice we won't go quietly into the night, we will not vanish withouth a fight, we're going to live on, we're going to survive, today we celebrate our..."

The movie has also set up a viral site for fans to recall the "war of 1996" fought in the original Independence Day. Will Smith is not part of the sequel but there are plenty familiar faces for fans of the franchise. New faces that make this sequel promising are Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg. This one is really going to stir up the emotions of the older generation which revelled in its themes of nationalism two decades ago, and will be a fresh take for the younger generation of movie goers.

In other news, Will Smith's character, Steve Hiller, is going to be dead in the sequel. In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Smith recently responded to the fact, and admitted that he was left quite sad by it. The actor also hinted at why he couldn't commit to the project.

"I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it," he said. "The trailer looks really cool. I'm going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out...It was terrible when I found out my character died."

Speaking to Cinema Blend, Director Roland Emmerich had also previously revealed why Smith didn't want to join the sequel.

"In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it, but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science-fiction film, which was his father-son story [After Earth], so he opted out," he said.

The movie also stars Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner.

Independence Day: Resurgence will hit theaters on June 24, 2016, with the independence day just around the corner.
