A skier was killed by an avalanche in British Columbia on Friday afternoon, in an out of bounds area near the Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

The victim, who had not been identified as of Saturday morning, was skiing with four friends around 4 p.m. when the avalanche happened, according to CBCNews. Three people were buried in the slide and two were rescued uninjured. When they located the third skier he was found dead, according to media reports.

Another report said the skier was in a group of five or six men skiing on the back side of the Revelstoke Montain Resort, according to Canada's CTV news.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement that along with search and rescue officials, they expected to recover the body of the deceased skier on Saturday.

The avalanche risk for most of British Columbia's alpine and treeline mountain regions had been upgraded to "high" on Friday, according to CBCNews.

A number of snowstorms coming through Friday in the area increased the risks of an avalanche because of heavy snow falling on top of a weak underlayer, according to James Foyer from the Canadian Avalanche Centre in Revelstoke.
