Seth MacFarlane said a joke about Chris Brown and Rihanna during his opening monologue at the 85th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday and according to a source, the singer watched the monologue live and was immediately comforted by Kim Kardashian.

MacFarlane compared the violence in Django Unchained to Brown's 2009 assault on Rihanna. The Oscars 2013 host compared the "unspeakably violent" award-winning film to "a date night" for the music couple.

"This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence," MacFarlane told the audience at the Dolby Theater In Los Angeles. "Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie."

The Ted director referred to the 2009 incident where Brown violently assaulted Rihanna in Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammys.

Brown reportedly saw MacFarlane crack the joke about him when he watched the live telecast at Elton John's AIDS Foundation Oscars fundraising and viewing party. Kardashian, who also attended John's party with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe, immediately "hugged and kissed" Brown after the joke aired to make him feel better about the insult.

"Kim and Khloe made a big deal about going up to Chris Brown to say hi," an eyewitness told Hollywood Life. "They hugged and kissed him and then chatted with him for at least 10 minutes."

Brown later talked about MacFarlane's joke to British media at John's party.

"People attack me and criticize me, it happens all the time,"  Brown told Mirror. "But they don't know me, and they don't know us."

He also said the comments about his relationship with Rihanna doesn't bother them any more, and people can continue to judge the couple but in reality "they don't know anything."

John's annual bash also drew the likes of Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Jim Carrey, Melanie Brown, Heidi Klum, Menu Suvari, Steven Tyler, Emma Roberts and her boyfriend Evan Peters, Chelsea Handler and her boyfriend hotelier Andres Balazs, Nicole Riche and Joel Madden, Kelly Osbourne and her fiancé, Anna Paquin and Stepehen Moyer.
