Today is a huge day for Grammy winning rapper Kendrick Lamar.

He is making history as the mayor of Compton is slated to give him the Key to the City later this afternoon.

The 28-year-old Compton native’s achieving ways started long before he was a household name and making moves in the rap industry.

He earned straight As at Centennial High School. One of his latest notable moments in the city was serving as grand marshal for the Compton Christmas Parade last year.

The city’s mayor, Aja Brown, explained Friday, “Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation. His message challenges the status quo and listeners to rethink our society’s institutions.”
The notable moment has caused us think of a few of our favorite moments from Lamar.

One of his most memorable is when he called out everyone’s favorite rappers on Big Sean’s Control hit; including Big Sean himself, J. Cole (who he called by his government name, Jermaine Cole), Mac Miller, A$AP Rocky, Meek Mill, Pusha T, Wale and even Drake.

Another moment to remember is when he performed Alright at the 2015 BET Awards. He brought to light the tragedies concerning police brutality that has been shaking the nation when patrol cars were a part of his now epic performance.

And if he wins the album of the year Grammy award Monday he’ll be making even more history.

He’ll be the first rapper to do so since Outkast won the coveted award back in 2004 for their hit Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

On top of that, he could also be the first rapper to ever take home the song of the year award if he wins.

He is already leading the Grammys with 11 nods.
