Switched at Birth is about to take on a new and highly controversial storyline this season.

Angelo Is Set To Reappear On Future Episode Of 'Switched At Birth'

While the series has never been afraid to tackle stories with debatable outcomes, including the mix of deaf and hearing students attending the same school as well as campus assault, there's something else that will take place on the series that will have viewers speaking up--the concept of race in school.

In a report from Daily Journal on Tuesday, series creator Lizzy Weiss mentioned the show has "both the ability and the responsibility to tell those stories" of campus racism.

'Switched At Birth' Season 5 Renewal Chatter

"We are really trying to be accurate and honest about both sides of the debate," Weiss said.

The site mentioned a moment when a white student goes to a party dressed as black rapper Lil Wayne, causing African-American students to show their outrage. The student claims this was a way of celebrating the artist and not mock him, leaving more questions to be asked. But however this gets resolved, Weiss said the final episode of this plotline will be meant for the protesters.

"That's the point in the story where we realized we needed to shift perspective entirely and let our black characters lead their own story," the creator said. "We see the entire episode from their points of view."

Switched at Birth Season 5 is expected to premiere this April on Freeform.
