Justin Theroux recently discussed HBO's The Leftovers and why it's for the best that it's ending sooner rather than later.

'The Leftovers' Finally Wins A Major Award

Theroux, who stars as Kevin Garvey in the series, talked to Slashfilm about the upcoming third season being the end of the road. The actor admitted that series co-creator Damon Lindelof had it planned to only do a few seasons rather than draw everything out.

"Damon was really upfront early on. Nobody likes to sign a five or six-year contract, but he was very clear from the get-go that this is not a show that lives for five or six years, that it would be best at three or four," Theroux explained. "I think actors in general don't like being tied up for that long. Just to know that there's going to be a period or punctuation on something--and to know when that'll be--is just... I like that."

'The Leftovers' Showrunner Talks How 'The Sky's The Limit' For Season 3

After months of fans not knowing whether The Leftovers would return for a third season, HBO finally made an announcement in December that the series had indeed been renewed, but that it would be the show's final season.

"I like knowing there's an end to the story," Theroux continued. "I can't imagine something worse than scripts being written into a tunnel, thinking, 'I don't know when this ends. I don't know.' It usually ends when people get sick of it, but I think it's great when it gets to end on its own terms."

Theroux also credited Lindelof and co-creator Tom Perrotta for improving upon the show with season 2.

"Not many shows take a hard run at the meaning of life, and those guys did," Theroux admitted. "He's kind of a master at weaving these elaborate tapestries and, somehow, evoking these reactions, whether they're good or bad."

The Leftovers season 3 does not yet have a premiere date.
