Dave Grohl stole the show with his performance of "Blackbird" in a "special performance" at tonight's Oscars.

The Foo Fighters frontman was announced to be performing at the show as part of a special performance with no further details provided, and he will be performing in addition to nominees Lady Gaga, Sam Smith and The Weeknd.

Grohl took to the stage for the In Memoriam segment, performing "Blackbird," as revered members of the industry, including Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Leonard Nimoy and several others were remembered onscreen.

Grohl was a surprising addition after two other nominees performances were canceled, including David Lang's "Simple Song #3," and Anohni's "Manta Ray."

Anohni, the first transgender singer to be nominated for an Academy Award later revealed a decision to not attend the show after her performance was canceled.
