Can fans expect a totally different kind of TV show on the next season of Nashville?

On Wednesday, Variety announced that the ABC series is going to add new showrunners if the show is lucky enough to receive a fifth season.

While a renewal isn't official right now, there's a good chance the show might be different if new episodes do end up happening based on who's coming aboard.

Marshall Herskowitz and Ed Zwick, who worked on My So-Called Life, have signed on for the fifth season if that ever happens. Apparently, the new showrunners will be replacing Dee Johnson.

My So-Called Life involved the life of a teenager dealing with harsh realities, which sets a different tone from the ABC drama filled with country music and fame. So, perhaps, there might be a new kind of energy in the series, but only if there will be a renewal.

Connie Britton, who plays Rayna on the ABC drama, opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about where the future might lie for the show. Since some shows have a habit of wrapping things up after announcing the final season, it was speculated if that might happen to Nashville. But so far, Britton hasn't heard a discussion about that topic.

"I don't feel like I'm ever privy to these conversations," she said. "But as far as I know, there hasn't been any conversation like that."

Nashville airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
