Smokey Robinson, the legendary Motown artist, was the mentor on "American Idol" Top 8 week Wednesday night where the remaining contestants performed songs by Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Madonna.

Tonight's show highlights included an awkward praise by judge Mariah Carey who tried to get the audience excited by saying Amber Holcomb's performance was "tour de force."

But the audience didn't understand her comment and when she expected everyone to clap, the lack of response was instead awkward.

"Nobody knows what that is?" Carey asked the audience while Nicki Minaj looked away and rolled her eyes.

When Carey tried to elaborate, she got bleeped.

In another highlight today, Nicki Minaj blasted the three remaining male contestants for their performance of I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) after one of them even forgot the lyrics of the song.

"I don't know what that was, but I'm going to act like I didn't even see it or hear it," Minaj said.
