Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s upcoming opponent, Robert Guerrero, was arrested Thursday morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport for attempting to board a plane with an unloaded weapon.

Guerrero is supposed to step inside the ring on May 4th with Mayweather and was in New York to promote his upcoming bout, which is also Mayweather's debut on Showtime boxing. He was caught trying to board a Delta flight to Las Vegas with a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, according to The New York Post. (A local NBC affiliate reported that the weapon was a 9mm Smith and Wesson.)

Neither Guerrero nor his manager, Luis DeCubas Jr., could be reached for comment about how this will affect the May 4th showdown, and Showtime declined to speak on the matter. The status of the fight is unknown but according to Yahoo! the show will likely go on as scheduled.

Guerrero was recently on the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club promoting his Christian faith and how it buoyed him while his wife battled leukemia.

During a press conference on Tuesday, executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports said of Guerrero, "We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert, knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual."

Guerrero's record stands at 31-1-1 with 18 knockouts. He is riding the momentum of an eight-fight winning streak, the last of which was a bloody unanimous decision over Andre Berto that propelled him into the national consciousness.

Mayweather's record is a glossy 43-0-0 with 26 knockouts. He has recent wins over top fighters such as Miguel Cotto, Victor Ortiz and Juan Manuel Marquez. His new revenue sharing deal with Showtime allows him to fight six times over the next 30 months, but he hasn't fought with such regularity since 2006.
