Mariah Carey had an embarrassing moment on American Idol Wednesday night after using the French term "Tour de Force" to give compliments to one of the female contestants.

When Amber Holcomb finished her stunning performance of Stevie Wonder's "Lately," and put the judges and the audience to their feet, Carey jumped in and said: "And that was a Tour de Force!" and tried to get the audience to clap.

But when neither the audience nor the judges followed her and she was left clapping by herself, the diva became visibly angry.

"Tour de force darlings, do you know what that means? Does anybody knows what tour de force means?" an angry Carey continued. "It was absolutely (bleep)..."

Although viewers at home could not hear what Carey said, Holcomb looked extremely happy at Carey's evaluation and the audience went crazy.

"Tour de Force" is a french term used to describe an exceptional achievement by an artist that is unlikely to be equaled by that person or anyone else.

It is also used to describe an unusual strength or skill in a person.
