Macy's accidentally mailed a catalog in March that listed a 14-karat gold and sterling silver necklace worth $1,500 on sale at $47, instead of the intended $479. Customers rushed to the Collin Creek Mall in Plano, Texas to get their hands on the expensive jewelry under a giant headline that read: "Super Buy."

Robert Bernard, a Macy's customer, was among the people flocking to snap up the great deal, but he was too late. The store had sold out but he was assured that a necklace would be shipped to his home at the sale price, and he received a receipt that said, "Total Savings was $1,400."

A few days later, the unlucky Bernard got a voicemail from Macy's saying, "This item has the wrong price for $47. The correct price is $479 dollars and because of that pricing error, your order has been canceled and I apologize."

In a statement to WFAA-TV Dallas, a Macy's spokesperson said, "When the mistake was caught, signage did go up in the fine jewelry department and on store doors alerting customers that a mistake had been made. For those customers who bought the necklace at the $47 price, they were fortunate. For the gentleman you spoke with, he was not so fortunate. We are sincerely sorry he was disappointed and unable to buy the necklace at the $47 price for his wife."

Bernard expressed his disappointment to the Dallas television station saying, "I'm very, very bothered by it because I don't want anybody else to feel the way I feel." Bernard had intended to purchase the necklace as an anniversary gift to his wife. He received a refund, but Macy's did not offer him anything else for the inconvenience.

Macy's was unable to tell reporters how many necklaces flew off their shelves at the incorrect $47 price.
