After the recent, mammoth announcement about Dragon Ball Super's next arc from Toei Animation and Akira Toriyama himself, the Dragon Ball community has been abuzz with rumors and speculations about the events that would transpire in the current anime's upcoming story arc.

Of course, among these speculations, most are centered on the two characters that have already been confirmed to appear, Future Trunks and Black Goku. While every anime fan is pretty much familiar with the identity of Future Trunks, Black Goku, the man who Toriyama stated would be the main enemy in the upcoming arc, is still a huge mystery.

Apart from the name, almost no details about Black Goku have been released to the public. Considering his name, however, it is likely that Black Goku would simply be a resurrected Goku in the future who turned evil. It is also possible that Black Goku might simply be Goku in who has turned evil sometime in the future.

If this is indeed the case, then it is also possible that Trunks' current mission to the past might end up involving a very grim mission. Due to the damage that Black Goku caused in the future, is it possible that the only way to prevent the catastrophe is to kill Goku in the present?

While these speculations are a bit out-of-character for an anime series such as Dragon Ball, it is not without merit. After all, Toriyama did state in his announcement that Trunks, as strong as he might be, barely escaped to the past with his life. This basically means that Black Goku has wreaked so much havoc in the future, the only way to repair things would be to undo things in the past.

Unfortunately for Goku, undoing things in the past might very well mean undoing his very existence. If this is indeed the case, Dragon Ball Super would end up exploring territories that it has never explored before. After all, Goku is the franchise's most iconic character. Thus, turning him evil is bad enough, but killing him before he turns evil would be a massive step towards a far more somber plot.

Of course, these are but speculations right now. Once the new Dragon Ball Super arc starts on June 12, most of these questions and speculations would be satisfactorily addressed for sure.
