An answer may have been revealed on why it didn't work out for Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama.

On Sunday, Hollywood Life reported that the couple, who broke up after six years together, came to a realization that they couldn't have a proper future. Apparently, neither of them didn't wanted to tie the knot nor have kids with each other, which is what potentially caused the split.

"[Demi and Wilmer] both were not in a rush to get married, they both were not in a rush to have kids and they thought that would change even when their close friends were doing all of that," a source said. "But the fact that they didn't have the urge to get married and have kids really got them talking on if it was worth continuing the relationship. And that is when they realized being best friends was the best option for them."

It sounds like it's going to be a tough yet mature process, at least for the pop star.

"The love that Demi has for Wilmer is second to none, and she knows she will never experience a love like the one they had ever again," an insider said. "They are always going to be in each other's lives, but the physical love won't be there and she is okay with that."

Both Lovato and Valderrama took to their Instagram pages on Friday to announce that they were calling it quits.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends," the message reads. "We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years."
