It has been six years since Red Dead Redemption became a massive hit which eventually boasted 13 million players. For the past years, Rockstar Games, the developer of the title, has been very quiet about the notion of a follow-up game. If recent leaks are any indication, however, it might seem like Red Dead Redemption 2 might very well be unveiled sometime this year.

While the developer has been very silent about the progress of the project, Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have all but supported the notion that a sequel or prequel to the 2010 game is being developed. In an interview back in 2014, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick practically confirmed that the Red Dead franchise would get another title in the future.

"It seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise. The risk of just releasing more games is that you end up just bulking up your release schedule and that isn't really what consumers want. Consumers want better, not more," he said.

Since then, however, the rumor mill has been largely silent about the developments in the franchise. That is, of course, until now. Recently, a concept art that seems to be featuring a scene from Red Dead Redemption 2 was posted online. Though the images themselves could easily be made by pranksters, fans were quick to notice that the concept art featured chromatic aberration, something that was featured prominently in more recent Rockstar games such as Grand Theft Auto V.

While some fans are speculating that the still image is from a possible Red Dead Redemption HD remake for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, others pointed out that the image in the still was not featured in the original Red Dead Redemption game at all. Thus, it seems to feature a location that is completely new.

While Rockstar has succeeded in keeping the game and its ongoing development under wraps, the emerging leaks and rumors about the highly-anticipated title are beginning to pile up. Of course, it is also completely possible for Rockstar to simply announce the game on the upcoming 2016 E3 conference.

Rockstar does have a presentation scheduled for E3 this year. Thus, if the gaming firm's reputation is any indication, there is a very good chance that Red Dead Redemption 2 might finally be officially announced within the next week.
