Authorities are investigating a fatal plane crash that resulted in the death of an Air Force general and his wife just outside Williamsburg, Va.

The Air Force confirmed that Major General Joseph D. Brown IV, 54, and his wife, Susan D. Brown, died on April 19 when the single-engine Cessna 210 he was piloting crashed, according to Fox News. Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said the plane crash occurred at 4:54 p.m. near the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, which is where the aircraft was supposed to have landed.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Kathleen Bergen said the plane plummeted about a half-mile from the airport into a subdivision. No injuries on the ground were reported. The Browns' family dog also died in the crash, but there were no other passengers on board.

"I was in my bedroom and heard a thud. One of neighbors came to my door. He asked if I had a fire extinguisher because a plane had just crashed by my house. That was the first I had heard of it. We saw a plane that had apparently hit a tree right next to our driveway. It had gone straight down into the ground. There was no sign of life," local resident Nancy Ward told WAVY.

Major General Joseph D. was a commandant of the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He had also worked in the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base.
