Jason Collins, the first openly gay active NBA player, will appear on Oprah Winfrey's Oprah's Next Chapter on Sunday.

Collins will appear on the show with his twin brother, Jarron Collins, and their parents, Portia and Paul Collins. His sister-in-law, Elsa Collins, and his aunt Teri, a San Francisco Superior Court judge to whom he first revealed that he was gay, will also appear on the show.

In the preview video for Jason's interview with Winfrey, the media mogul asked his parents about the day their son came out to them.

"So was there the releasing of the dream for the idea you had for your son, who he would be.... walking down the aisle with?" Winfrey asked Paul's parents.

"Yes. Yes there was," Paul told Winfrey. "Any parent would have that for a child. Especially when you didn't know the child was gay. You (think) he will eventually get married, he's waiting for the end of his career to do that and um...you just expect that that's gonna happen, he'll have children or whatever might be and then you change from that."

"Did you change immediately?" Winfrey asked.

"Part of the process... he told us to go home and let it resonate for the two of us to talk about it," Portia answered. "On the way home we called him. On the way home we said 'we love you' and still you're going through a lot of different checklists. 'Did you see this? Did you think this?' You think 'no.'"

Collins, a former center for the Washington Wizards, came out in the May 6 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Oprah's Next Chapter starring Jason Collins will air May 5 at 7:30pm/6:30c on OWN. Watch the preview here.
