E! News Hacked, Twitter Posts Outed Justin Bieber In 'Exclusive'
Hackers who had allegedly broken into E! Online's Twitter account on Saturday posted false information about Justin Bieber's sexuality.
They tweeted what they claimed was an "exclusive" from Justin saying "I'm a gay," which led to 1,200 fans to retweet this information and 351 to mark it as their favorite, according to a report by the New York Daily News.
A group that calls itself the Syrian Electronic Army took responsibility for the posts. They reportedly also hacked into the Twitter accounts of 60 Minutes, the BBC, NPR, Reuters and The Associated Press.
They tweeted celebrity gossip to the 5 million followers of E! prompting E! to suspend it.
"Eonline's breaking news twitter and sms accounts were compromised today," the organization said in a statement, according to the report. "We're working to have this resolved as quickly as possible and are fully investigating the incident. "We apologize for any confusion that the erroneous news alerts may have caused."
The SEA sent out a several fake messages in response to Bieber's coming out of the closet.
One tweet stated that Selena Gomez, whom Bieber has had an on-and off-relationship with for the last several months was supportive of his declaration, the Daily News reported.
